Herne Bay joint manager John Embery hails squad's 'exemplary' attitude after derby win over Whitstable

John Embery admitted Saturday’s derby win over Whitstable was the perfect antidote for Herne Bay after a week of turmoil off the pitch.
Bay saw leading scorer Jake Embery depart for Maidstone and then revealed that the decision to release the young striker from his contract was down to the club’s parlous financial position.
Jake’s father John was the subject of abuse on social media after the move but Embery senior said derby day gave everybody, including co-manager Jermaine Darlington and the players, the perfect opportunity to put it all behind them.
Bay’s 3-1 win before a crowd of 465 at Winch’s Field completed a home and away league double over their closest neighbours.
Bay joint boss Embery explained: “We had a difficult week and our preparation wasn’t great but by Friday we said ‘Right, no more talking about anything that’s happened off the pitch’.
“The boys had to get their game heads on and they did.
“They went out with exactly the right attitude and played really well.
“We knew we had to deal with their physical threat and if we did that we’d be okay because technically we’re a better team.
“ I have to say their keeper Dan Eason was brilliant and without him we could have had a few more goals.
“I can’t praise the boys enough, they’ve all pulled together, like we all have and their attitude has been exemplary.”
Embery revealed that he and Darlington had spoken to fans after the game, some of whom had apologised for comments they had made following his son’s departure.
He also said he was pleased the club’s poor financial position was now out in the open.
He explained: “I’m glad they came out with the statement.
“I think honesty is the best policy and on the back of that the club has had conversations with potential sponsors and individuals, who want to help, whether that’s with money or volunteering at the club.”
Of the personal criticism, he added: “I’m not on social media but people had shown me what was being said.
“It didn’t bother me but I did have people on Saturday say to me ‘Sorry John I got it wrong’ and I respect them for that.”
Bay who are up to 14th – their highest position this season – travel to East Grinstead on Saturday and hope to be able to choose from a near full strength squad.
