John Embery wants his Herne Bay side to show more effort and desire following their worst performance since he became joint-manager.

Bay were thrashed 7-1 at home to VCD Athletic in the Bostik South East on Saturday.

They have two important games coming up this week with a their FA Trophy second qualifying round clash with Needham Market on Saturday and a trip to Hastings in the league on Tuesday.

Embery said: “It was the worst performance I have from the team since I have been a manager. It was as simple as that.

“It was due to the lack of effort and desire and we got what we deserved.

“They have a lot to prove. We do not want players who think they can take it easy.

“Jermaine and I are in constant communication and we will assess who we have available and take our decisions with the team from there.

“We will see what reaction we get from the players in training this week.”

Bay made three signings at the end of last week with Kyron Lightfoot joining from Ramsgate, Simon Overland from Faversham and Afolabi Coker from Thamesmead.

More signings and changes are expected with players also hoping to return from injury.

Embery said: “There will definitely be changes and we are hoping to sign one more player after adding three last week.

“We need one or two different players for the sort we have at the moment.

“We are hoping we our two centre-backs will return soon with Matt Fry hopefully this week and Ben Gorham the next.”

Embery is looking for a radical improvement from his side after they gifted goals to VCD Athletic striker Charlie MacDonald in their 7-1 defeat.

He added: “If we got beaten and they are a better side then fair enough but we did not work hard enough and made it easy for them. There are no excuses.

“There was a couple of players that did alright but the rest of them did not work hard enough.

“We handed him (MacDonald) the goals and could not have made things any easier for him to score. Four or five of their goals were through our own fault.”
