Herne Bay have sold winger Sam Hasler to Folkestone for an undisclosed fee.

Hasler has served a seven-match ban after back-to-back red cards and was due to make his Bay return in the FA Trophy this weekend.

But Invicta made their move and Bay boss Sam Denly agreed to let him go.

Denly said: “It’s been going on for a week or so. Sam’s been with me four years, he’s our best player and it’s not ideal but I’d never stand in someone’s way. I’m gutted to see him go – 100%.

“He’s had his issues with discipline and at times he’s let me down but I always made it clear I was happy for him to stay if he let his football do the talking.

“But the opportunity came up with Folkestone and he was keen to make the move with them being a league higher.

“He’s a contracted player, so we’ve got money for him and hopefully we’ll be able to use it get a few in. We’re not talking loads and loads of money but we’ll see.”

Denly, who has freed up further funds by releasing striker Stuart Zanone, was due to meet with Bay’s board last night (Wednesday) to discuss budget concerns.

He’s assured fans he will be staying at Winch’s Field – even if he doesn’t like the answers.

Denly said: “I know we’ve not got a lot of money. I’ve made it clear we need to bring a few players in if we want to compete.

“I’ve got some decisions to make but I’m not going to walk away. I’m not like that. I like the club, I’m a Herne Bay lad, I enjoy being the manager, we’ve got a good group of players and great supporters.”

Herne Bay chase an upset when they host Ryman League, Premier Division club Harrow Borough in the FA Trophy first qualifying round on Saturday (3pm).
