Herne Bay boss Sam Denly backs keeper Toby Wood after mistake against Faversham

Young Toby Wood experienced the highs and lows of football in the space of 48 hours.
The Herne Bay under-21 goalkeeper earned the plaudits for his senior debut against Whyteleafe, kept his place at Faversham on Monday, only to be sent off – one of two red cards in the 6-3 defeat.
Boss Sam Denly said: “Toby was outstanding on Saturday but that was what my team-talk was all about – you can’t have one good game, you have to be consistent.
“He made one mistake at Faversham which cost him and the team but I am sure he has got many more good performances in his locker.
“We conceded poor goals and if we play like that against teams of the calibre of Faversham in the future, we won’t be going anywhere and must be better defensively.
“We let in two bad ones, levelled with great strikes before conceding two more.”
Denly claimed the two red cards handed out to Wood and Kenny Sanders were both harsh.
He said: “Our discipline has been excellent this season but our record may precede us.
“Toby brought down Dean Grant outside the box. It wasn’t a goalscoring opportunity and he was sent off for dangerous play.
“It was claimed he kneed him in the head which he didn’t. It was worth a yellow card – move on.
“I don’t think he realised he had booked Kenny before and nobody appealed against the foul which led to him being sent off.
“The referee certainly played his part and ruined a good spectacle in my view.”
Bay switch their attentions back to the FA Cup and the visit of Evo Stik Southern League Central side Ashford Town (Middx) in the first qualifying round tie at Winch’s Field on
Saturday.
