Herne Bay joint-boss John Embery says Bostik South East survival is main focus

Joint boss John Embery believes Herne Bay are finally starting to fulfil their potential but says survival in Bostik South East remains their main focus.
Bay’s eye-catching 7-2 win at Greenwich on Saturday was their fourth victory in six matches and lifted them out of the bottom two at the expense of Borough and Faversham.
Embery explained: “No one has scored more goals than us in the last six matches and had we beaten Sevenoaks, as we should have (they lost 2-1 at home on January 5) we would be top of the form guide.
“As it is we’re still in the top four form wise. We’re in play-off form, but all we’re thinking about is let’s make ourselves safe.
“A month ago we were 10 points adrift of the teams above us and now all of a sudden we’ve dragged them in and gone past a couple.
“I kept saying that we’ve been playing well and the recent results are starting to prove that but we mustn’t get ahead of ourselves.”
At the heart of Bay’s thumping win over Greenwich was a four-goal performance from Embery’s son Jake, who now has 38 goals in 64 appearances for Bay.
It was the second time this season the 18-year-old has scored four in a game – he also managed the feat in September’s 5-4 victory over Ramsgate – and Embery senior says his lad has qualities you can’t teach.
He said: “Jake is just a natural goalscorer and has been ever since he was a kid. It’s just what he’s good at. He scores all types of goals, volleys, headers, in the box, outside the box, left foot, right foot.
“He anticipates things. He thinks quickly and he’s very level headed. Even when things aren’t going for him he never goes missing. If he misses a chance he’s always thinking ‘I’ll get the next one’.”
Bay are without a fixture this weekend but return to action with games against the league’s top two, Hastings (home, January 26) and Cray (away, February 2).
Embery is still pursuing another signing but has said goodbye to Miles Cornwell who has left Winch’s Field after two years to join Whitstable.
