A career burglar who raided the home of an elderly man stealing his late wife's jewellery has been jailed.

Paul Jones, of Lyminge, broke into the house in Castle Road, Hythe, on June 19 taking jewels worth £5,000.

The 47-year-old was sentenced to two years and five months in prison following a hearing at Canterbury Crown Court yesterday after previously pleading guilty to the charges.

Jones took advantage of an insecure back door to enter the house where he took jewellery including engagement rings, earrings, necklaces and watches belonging to the man's recently deceased wife.

Forensic officers investigating the property after the incident tracked down Jones after finding a tissue in the kitchen with his DNA on.

Officers arrested him at his home on July 2 and was later charged with burglary.

Jones has served time behind bars for several other burglary offences in the past.

Lead investigating Det Con Robert Goodban said: "Jones is a career criminal who committed this despicable crime, causing a great deal of stress to an elderly and vulnerable man.

"I am pleased he is now off the streets and brings some comfort to the victim."
