A large group of travellers have pitched up on a popular recreation ground.

About a dozen caravans are set up on Hythe Green after arriving this afternoon.

The green - used for the likes of boot fairs, circus and community events - is owned by Hythe Town Council.

It is protected by a covenant, which was created in 1853 to ensure Hythe Green remains a designated spot for "amusement recreation" and not built on.

Hythe Town Council says they have now instructed a solicitor.

A statement reads: "We are aware of the Unauthorised Encampment on Hythe Green and the correct legal proceedings are being followed to remove the encampment from The Green.

"If you have witnessed the visitors entering the land unlawfully, please could you send any evidence to the Town Council Offices at Clerk@Hythe-tc.gov.uk

"Please report any Anti-Social Behaviour to the Police via 101 / online and emergencies via 999."

Last week, travellers pitched up at a seaside car park in Swalecliffe, where a height barrier had been broken.

The group moved on last Thursday.
