Eyewitness Lilly Manton, 21, a waitress at nearby Gingers Kitchen, said: “I don’t know what happened but the dog must have been scared or something, and it just ran off down the road with the bin still attached.
“We saw it knock over the lady. It was really worrying because she couldn’t stand up at first but eventually she walked over to the ambulance car when it arrived.
“The dog just ran off. Someone tried to stop it but I don’t know where it went.
“It’s owner came out of the shop and went to look for it.
“There were loads of people surrounding the lady and there was quiet a lot of commotion.
I hope she is okay.”
A SECamb spokesman said: “A paramedic car was dispatched to the scene and assessed the patient who was suffering pains in the hip area.
“The patient was taken to William Harvey hospital for further assessment”.
Her injuries are not thought to be serious.
