Hythe Pool closed after Storm Katie causes roof damage

11:00, 29 March 2016

Hythe's swimming pool has been forced to close after Storm Katie caused a breach to the building's roof.

The main pool in South Road, Hythe, closed today following the discovery of damage to roof panels.

The force of the storm was so strong that it lifted roof panels and caused a breach to the actual roof itself.

The gym and the training will remain open during the works as those areas are not affected by the hole in the roof.

A spokesman for Shepway District Council, which runs the centre, said there was no confirmed date of when the pool will reopen.

They added: "We have had to temporarily close Hythe Pool because of damage to the roof.

"We aim to get this repaired, and the pool re-opened, as soon as possible."

Roofing contractors and council staff have started work to repair the "small hole" today.

It is said to only be the size of a brick but scaffolding needs to be put around the building and repairs inside the building are required as well.

The pool had been due to host a second purple pool day this Sunday, April 3 with a host of activities including zorbs, aqua zumba and a paddle.

It has not been confirmed whether the fun day will still take place.

Check on the council's Facebook page or call 01303 269177 for the updates on the pool's opening.
