Investigation into fatal plane crash in Postling, near Hythe, continues

Investigators remain at the site of a fatal plane crash today.

A team from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch are in Postling, a village near Hythe, after the yellow Tiger Moth came down yesterday afternoon.

They are being supported by members of Kent Police in the field off Pilgrims Way, close to the Pent Farm Airfield.

Two men were on board the light aircraft that came down at around 2pm.

One man, aged 51, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

The second, in his 40s, was airlifted to a London hospital.

It is not known if the men are local to Kent.

An Air Accidents Investigation Branch spokesman said: "Yesterday, the AAIB sent a team to investigate an accident involving a Tiger Moth aircraft near Hythe, Kent.

"There were two people on board.

"Our investigators will remain on site today to continue with the initial part of our investigation."

The inspectors' job is to document and preserve evidence to try to understand the circumstances of the incident.

They will examine physical evidence, including both the aircraft and details such as ground marks and fuel samples, and talk to witnesses while their recollection is still fresh.

After the plane crashed, police, fire crews and the ambulance service were called to the site.

They remained at the scene until late last night.

This morning, it was confirmed a man had died and another was seriously injured.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "At 2.05pm on Sunday 21 July 2019 Kent Police was notified that a light aircraft had crashed in a field in Postling near Hythe.

"Officers attended the scene with partner agencies including the South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

"A 51-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin have been informed. Another man in his 40s was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is investigating the incident however police remain at the scene and will prepare a report for the Coroner."
