Manager Steve Watt says there’s no side better prepared than Hythe for the Isthmian South East play-off run-in.

The Cannons underlined their potential with a dominant 4-0 home win over East Grinstead on Saturday.

Jack Steventon, Jason Fregene, Frannie Collin and Ethan Smith were the scorers.

Victory kept them four points off the top five, going into two games in three days against struggling sides over Easter.

Eighth-placed Hythe are at Burgess Hill on Saturday and host Faversham at Reachfields on Monday (both 3pm).

Hythe’s post-Christmas surge up the table centred on a busy schedule of Saturday-Tuesday football while catching up on postponed matches.

They’ve shown they can handle games coming thick and fast and Watt hopes that will stand them in good stead over Easter, plus their ability to see out tight games.

“There’s no team better prepared for what we’re up against,” said Watt.

“The boys have been written off by everyone and even now we’re not mentioned as play-off hopefuls.

“We’ve got more points than Sevenoaks yet people still talk about them over us. It’s something the boys have got used to, so there’s no nerves on our part.

“We’re used to tight games and doing things the hard way.

“We’ve got a small squad but we got used to playing Saturday-Tuesday.

“We had it for five or six weeks solid and the boys came through with great results to get us in this position, so it won’t be a problem playing Saturday-Monday.

“One thing we’ve been very good at this season is keeping people fit. That’s given us a chance to be where we are and hopefully we can keep that up this weekend.

“Easter is an important time of year most seasons but even more so this year.

“If we come out of those two games with a minimum of four points we should be in and around it because teams around us are playing each other so points will be dropped somewhere, which is good for us.

“Our last four games are against teams in the bottom five.

“People might say that looks an easier run-in but they’re all fighting for their lives so there are no easy games.

“We lost to East Grinstead, who are down there, ourselves a few weeks ago, so you can’t take anyone lightly.

“We take every team seriously and treat them with the respect they deserve.

“If we come out of these games with a good points return, we can attack the last two games with nothing to lose and hopefully sneak into those play-offs.”

Watt had former Cannons forward Alex Flisher alongside him in the dugout against East Grinstead, with assistant boss Darren Blackburn recovering from a back operation and coach Mickey Phillips departing for a management job at Larkfield & New Hythe.

The pair liked what they saw as Hythe made amends for a 3-2 away defeat by the Wasps just a few weeks ago.

Watt said: “From minute one, you could see it was going to be a comfortable day.

“The boys were fully focused and knew what they had to do.

“Credit to the groundstaff for getting the game on, when you look at all the games off in our league.

“Conditions were tricky, so we had to play a certain way, which we did really well.

“We’ve played better this season and not won but the boys delivered the performance I expected.

“It was a mature performance in terms of how we did things at the right times. We wore them down and scored at key moments, which knocked the stuffing out of them.”
