Hythe boss Clive Cook is getting ever closer to knowing his best side – although he has not ruled out further additions to his ranks during pre-season.

Town continued their preparations towards another promotion-push in the newly-named Bostik South with a 1-0 win over North side Tilbury at Reachfields on Saturday.

Cook said: “We played well in the first half. It wasn’t a 1-0 game but it’s always difficult with the number of changes after half-time.”

Cook is still in discussions with two potential signings but he said: “I am not in any hurry. I am happy with what I have at the moment – if we had to go into the season with this squad I’d be perfectly happy.

“I’m talking to a couple but any additions would have to be a lot better than what I’ve already got, which isn’t easy.”

After Tuesday night’s 3-2 defeat at Sheppey, Town head to Peacehaven & Telscombe on Saturday (3pm) before hosting Crowborough at Reachfields next Tuesday (7.45pm).

Cook added: “Things will start to settle down a bit in terms of the team and the number of changes in the next couple of games.”

Hythe’s fixtures for the new Bostik South season were released last week and saw Town handed an opening day clash with Walton Casuals at Reachfields on Saturday, August 12.

The Cannons host Ramsgate in a derby on Bank Holiday Monday, August 28, and Ashford on September 16.

The return clash at Ramsgate is set for Boxing Day while Herne Bay head to Reachfields on New Year’s Day with the return at Winch’s Field on Easter Monday.

The regular season ends with the visit of Corinthian Casuals on April 28.

Cook said: “No matter who you get it’s going to be difficult, there are not going to be any easy games this season – it will probably be harder than last year, especially with so many (10) other Kent sides in the division.

“You can’t do too much homework on sides from the season before because teams make so many changes and everything is so different in a new season. We start at home, though, and finish at home and you can’t ask for much more than that.”

Ryan Johnson has been installed as Town’s new club captain with Sam Adams as vice-captain.
