Nick Davis is raring to go after returning to management as the new boss of Hythe Town.

Davis has been named as successor to Sammy Moore, who resigned after the opening day of the Isthmian South East season.

It’s his first job since leaving Sittingbourne in January last year and he’s refreshed after a good break from football.

He was approached by Cannons chairman Matt Smith early last week and the time was right to return.

Davis, 42, was assistant manager at Sheppey during Smith’s time as Ites chairman and they know each other well.

“It’s the first time I’ve really had a break from it, which was needed, and now I’m just hungry for it again,” said Davis, whose first game in charge is at Beckenham this Saturday (3pm).

“I was eager to come back and thankfully an opportunity came up that hopefully works for both of us.

“I’ve known Matt for a long time.

“I had a message from him on the Monday or Tuesday, I met him in the the evening and went from there.

“We had a couple of days of discussions and here I am.

“He moved mountains at Sheppey and even in the small time he’s been at Hythe, it’s amazing what he’s done.

“The plans going forward are very exciting and it was a big reason for me to accept the job because Matt Smith’s involved.

“He’s very forward-thinking. He makes things happen and he wants a community club.

“I think the future is in really good hands with Matt. It’s only going to go from strength to strength.”

Davis has taken his first training session and intends to give the squad he’s inherited a chance to impress.

He’ll also be looking to strengthen before the Beckenham game.

“I’ve said to them everyone’s got a blank canvas,” said Davis, who’s also managed Ramsgate and VCD and will be assisted by Damien Hopkins and Steve Whitton.

“Whatever’s happened in the past has happened.

“We want people who want to be at the football club and everyone will get a fair crack at it.

“We had 18 there at training on Saturday, which was good.

“There’ll be a couple of new faces in time for the weekend, which we feel we needed in a couple of areas.

“We’ll look at it and see where we need to strengthen in the coming weeks.

“It’s a little bit of a difficult time to come in but when is there ever a good time to come in?

“When there’s a managerial change, it’s never easy.

“I’d have preferred to have a pre-season to work on things but it is what it is.

“We just have to assess how things are over the next couple of weeks and tweak it here and there.”

Davis’ break from management has given him time to take stock.

That can only benefit Hythe, who host Sheppey on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm).

“I think I’ve learnt a lot, for sure,” he said.

“There’s certain things you’d definitely do differently, learning from mistakes, but it’s the same principles for me.

“I want to be as organised as we can and be hard to beat.

“That’s the aim and then I want to get my ideas across as to how we want to play and then you can start to mould it.

“But, at the minute, we just need to see what we’ve got in the club and try and get the best out of everyone.

“If that’s good enough, great. If not, we need to try and bring players in that will make us better and who want to play for the club.”
