Darren Oldaker looks set to extend his loan spell at Hythe Town.

The Gillingham midfielder's month-long deal is due to expire after the Cannons host Cray Wanderers on Saturday.

But manager Steve Lovell would be happy for the 19-year-old to carry on what has been a successful time with the non-league club.

Lovell said: "He should do it. He has been in our League 1 squad and he should do well in Bostik South.

"We sent him there to get games under his belt and that's what he's done. He has done well down there.

"I will speak to DJ and see if he wants to continue it.

"The next month we could call him back in 24 hours, so it won’t do him any harm to stay there if he is enjoying it. He trains with us every day and just plays games for them.

"If he is helping them out, enjoying it and playing games, then it's common sense for him to keep playing."

Hythe are unbeaten since Oldaker's arrival and have taken 10 points of a possible 12.

Manager Sam Denly said: “We’ve made it very clear that we’d love him to stay until the end of the season and if there’s a possibility it can happen, we’ll be doing everything we can to make sure it does.

“He’s been outstanding, a breath of fresh air for everyone. He’s scored four goals, got four or five assists and he really has been excellent.

“He stands out head and shoulders and it’s a compliment to the lad.

“Players can come in from leagues above and not try but he hasn’t done that. He’s worked hard, his attitude’s been spot-on and he’s been showing his quality.

“It’s been good to watch and the boys have welcomed him in. He’s bought into it straight away and we’d loved having him involved with us.

“If it can carry on, brilliant and if it doesn’t, he’s been a great servant for the month we’ve had him and we wish him all the success in the future. I’m sure he’s got a good career ahead of him in football.

“He can unlock games, he can turn a game on its head. He’s got the quality to be able to do that and it’s certainly given the boys a lift.”

Hythe are seventh in Bostik South, seven points outside the play-offs with 10 games left.
