Hythe Town battled back from 2-0 down to knock out Ashford United in a penalty shoot-out at Reachfields in the FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round.

Ashford took the lead inside 20 seconds when Tashi Kwayle headed home and they appeared on course to progress when Tom Fagg scored a second goal with 20 minutes left.

But two minutes later Tom Walmsley headed Hythe back into the contest and they levelled the scores in the 89th minute through Tom Wynter’s header.

The penalty shoot-out saw 10 perfect spot-kicks with the scored levelled at 5-5 – former Gills midfielder Darren Oldaker scored a Panenka penalty for Hythe.

Wynter then blazed over but Jack Steventon fluffed his line when he missed the chance to put Ashford through by sending his spot-kick over the bar.

Both teams scored again to make it 6-6 before Walmsley netted for Hythe, leaving Tom O’Connor the unfortunate player to miss when his penalty was saved by Hythe keeper Nathan Harvey.

Sam Flisher scored the winner as Sittingbourne claimed an impressive 1-0 home win over East Grinstead.

Anthony Edgar grabbed the winner for Herne Bay as they won 2-1 at VCD.

Mobolaji Dawodu put Bay ahead in the second half before Anthony Adesite levelled matters from 25 yards, only for Edgar’s low drive to immediately restore the visitors’ advantage.

Faversham’s Harry Harding scored a brace as they defeated Hertford Town 4-1 at Salters Lane.

Fresh from a glowing reference from boss James Collins, defender Matt Bourne headed Faversham back on level terms after Samuel Faniyan’s opener for the visitors.

Kelvin Ogboe’s penalty after a foul on Harding just before half-time put Faversham ahead and Harding struck twice, including once in stoppage time with the visitors having Chris Gosling dismissed for two yellow cards late on.

An early goal from Matt Bunyan ended Whitstable’s hopes as they went down 1-0 at Ashford Town (Middlesex), who sit third in Isthmian South Central.

The team directly above Ashford in the table, Bracknell, overcame Sevenoaks thanks to two second-half goals.

A penalty from Sebastian Bowerman and substitute Shaquille Ishmael saw Oaks lose 2-0 at Larges Lane.

Goals either side of half-time from Devontae Romeo and James Clark saw Marlow progress 2-0 at Phoenix Sports.

Cray Valley are still in the FA Cup – but they are already out of the FA Trophy after losing at Whyteleafe on penalties. A week after the teams drew 2-2 in the league, this time around they played out a goalless draw with Leafe progressing 3-2 in the shoot-out.

Ramsgate were given a walkover win against Canvey Island, who had to withdraw from the competition due to a positive Covid-19 test in their squad.

In league action, Folkestone suffered their fourth Isthmian Premier defeat in seven matches when they went down 2-0 at Leatherhead.

Crossley Lema gave the hosts the lead after 14 seconds and Andrew Briggs’ free-kick added a second after the break.

Cray Wanderers came from behind to end a run of back-to-back league defeats by winning 3-1 at Haringey.

Alfred Bawling put the hosts ahead but Bradley Pritchard levelled before the half-hour.

Ben Mundele and Rhys Murrell-Williamson scored in the second half to claim the points.

Margate suffered a third successive league defeat despite taking the lead at home to Worthing through teenage striker Richard Afrane-Kesey, who joined the club on loan from Charlton on Friday.
