Hythe want to make amends when they host Isthmian South East title contenders Chatham.

The Cannons were thrashed 6-1 at Maidstone Road last October, with the return taking place at Reachfields this Saturday (3pm).

It was out of character for Steve Watt’s side, who have conceded only 20 goals in their other league 22 games, and beat Corinthian 2-1 on Tuesday night.

“Chatham are the only team we feel we haven’t given our best against this season,” said boss Watt.

“It’s the only game where we’ve completely deserved to lose.

“Take nothing away from Chatham. They played well and are a very good side. It was just one of those days where any mistake we made ended up in a goal, which has been unlike us.

“Without that 6-1, we’d have the best defensive record in the division.

“It’s not that we owe them one but I’m sure the boys have that fire inside them to try and put things right.

“We’re massive underdogs. We know that. We’re not expected to get anything from it.

“The pressure is on Chatham because they’re going for the title and it’s tight up there.

“It’s up to us to make them feel that pressure and try and do ourselves justice.

“That’s what I’ll be saying to the boys. Do yourselves justice and show Chatham how good we actually are.

“They’ll be coming here knowing how tough it is at our place.

“Ramsgate came here on Boxing Day and only just beat us 1-0. That’s the only defeat we’ve had here."

Hythe - 3-1 winners at Three Bridges on Tuesday last week - missed out on a third successive victory when they lost 2-0 at Lancing on Saturday.

“We had two goals disallowed that I thought were fine and their keeper was man-of-the-match - he’s made four or five excellent saves.” said Watt.

“We created more chances than we did at Three Bridges but we didn’t take them and we’ve given them two goals.

“We looked very comfortable. We were under no threat. It was just a lack of concentration.

“The performance itself was more than good enough to come away with something.

“If we’d not made the mistake at 0-0, I think we win that game comfortably."

Hythe responded by coming from a goal down to beat Corinthian at home.

Trailing to Sam Bewick's early opener, Johan Caney-Bryan levelled and Jason Fregene scored a last-minute winner as the Cannons climbed to 11th place.
