Developers have started work to demolish a former pub, dating back to the 18th century, and replace it with homes.

The Sportsman pub in Sandwich Road, Cliffsend, near Ramsgate, closed in 2017.

Previously operated by Shepherd Neame, the site was acquired by east Kent developer Future Homes.

It was given planning permission to develop seven new homes as part of the development.

A new three-storey building will be erected with three apartments on the upper floors and commercial space for a cycle cafe on the ground floor.

There will also be four semi-detached, three-bedroom houses.

Future Homes’ managing director Martin Sturge said: “We are a Thanet-based development company and our team has lived and worked in the area for over 40 years. We are really looking forward to getting to know our neighbours and becoming part of the Cliffsend community.”
