A leading consultant from a well-known clinic in Kent is being featured in a six-part series on BBC about cosmetic surgery.

Bella Vou’s Amir Nakhdjevani, who is a consultant plastic surgeon at the cosmetic clinic in Tunbridge Wells, has joined model Vogue Williams and journalist Mobeen Azhar in BBC 3's Plastic Surgery Undressed.

The overall aim of the new factual series - which is also available on BBC iPlayer and will be aired on BBC 1 in January 2020 - is to give people the information they need to make the right decision about cosmetic surgery.

The series covers a different procedure on each episode, including rhinoplasty, liposculpture, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, hair transplant and breast reduction.

The team will be joined by four different participants, who are all considering having the same procedure, in each episode.

Plastic Surgery Undressed was inspired by recent research which suggests almost half of British people aged between 18 and 34 were considering some form of cosmetic surgery.

“I am thrilled to be a part of the brand new BBC Three series, Plastic Surgery Undressed with Vogue Willams and Mobeen Azhar,” said Amir.

“We have certainly seen a rise in plastic surgery. It’s becoming more acceptable for people to have surgery to look and feel better.

“With cheaper surgery offered abroad and as more celebrities have surgery it has become part of our life.”

Having surgery should not be taken lightly and the same applies when looking for the right surgeon.

As some medical horror stories have shown, cheaper is not always better.

“The information is out there and you need to first research the procedure and your surgeon online,” continued Amir.

“Narrow down reputable surgeons with good reviews and the right qualifications but be wary of cheap surgery options abroad as you don’t have come back or aftercare like other good establishments.

“Make sure you see a few surgeons and see who is best for what you’re looking for.

“Ensure the surgeons regularly performs many of the procedures you’re interested in and that they’ve also performed corrective surgery on those who’ve had bad results.

He added: “Corrective surgery requires a whole set of expertise other surgeons don’t have and that should give you the confidence you need in your final decision-making.”

Those wanting more expert advice, particularly on Liposuction and Breast Augmentation, can catch the episodes in January next year.

The show’s surgery seekers will learn more about operations and hear from people who have had it in the past, ending with them all watching a live feed of the surgery being performed on someone at a nearby hospital.

Despite getting a window into what cosmetic surgery entails, Amir says it is still imperative that the right questions are asked from those thinking of going under the knife.

“Make sure you understand all the risks involved and have realistic expectations,” he said.

“Ask your surgeon to show their results and ask to speak to some of their patients. See other surgeons and check their experience and qualifications.

“Surgery is not to be taken lightly and although it can be positive, it can have a negative impact on your life if it goes wrong and so it’s not for everyone.

According to show presenter Mobeen Azhar, the emphasis isn’t on delivering a procedure but rather on delivering information and choice.

“A good surgeon should guide people through what would be best for them rather than pressuring vulnerable patients into having surgery.”

A total of 31% of UK adults would be interested in having a surgical cosmetic procedure in the future, according to figures from Mintel.

Willingness to undergo a surgical procedure is higher among women, with 37% indicating that they would consider having one.

Interest in cosmetic surgery peaks at 52% of women aged from 18 to 34. Around 7% of men would consider a hair transplant.

“I think it’s so important that all of us are educated and informed so we can make safe choices and the way to do that is to talk,” added show presenter Azhar.

“I am a great believer in open discussion.

“Nothing should be out of bounds or off the table, so let’s talk about it and then we can get informed and can make the decisions that are right for us.”
