A college has become the first in the county to win approval for its engineering and construction courses by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Canterbury College is celebrating after the prestigious professional body backed its high quality standards across a range of Edexcel BTEC and City and Guilds courses.

IMechE is licensed by the Engineering Council to approve Modern and Advanced Apprenticeships in Engineering from companies, colleges and training providers.

Recognition reflects the quality of industry standard teaching and facilities provided by the college which works closely with employers across the county to meet their skill needs.

Michael Gaughran, section manager Engineering Technologies, Fabrication and Welding, said: "The department has been working hard with employers, discussing their requirements with the onus on learners going into industry with a good practical and theoretical understanding."

He added: "Most importantly, Canterbury College is sending out very good engineering students to our employers at a standard recognised by the industry."

Canterbury College has already won plaudits from other professional bodies. Earlier this year, it was awarded the Training Quality Standard (TQS) for services that match students to employers and jobs.
