Caterham Cars is boosting production at its Dartford factory to meet growing demand.

The niche manufacturer is ramping up capacity to satisfy buoyant sales of the Seven, its lightweight two-seater sportscar.

The move could create new jobs in the future, although the company says that upping production will safeguard existing jobs and offer overtime.

The firm says the increased capacity will go some way towards shortening the a three to four month waiting list.

Over the past 12 months, Caterham has enjoyed strong sales both in the UK and a rapidly-maturing overseas market.

The British marque was one of only three European brands at the Tokyo Motor Show last November.

"Despite the economic background we have recorded an extremely positive sales period," said managing director Ansar Ali.

"Adding to our capacity merely underlines our position in the market."

Prices of the Seven range from £18,000 for the Entry Level Roadsport 125 to about £40,000 for the fast Superlight R300.

Since its launch in March 2008, the Superlight R500, which can hit 60mph in under 2.9 seconds, has sold around 100 units worldwide. Caterham's output is around 500 a year.

Mr Ali added: "The Export market has certainly been boosted by the exchange rate but more decisively by our success in achieving European Type Approval last year and the launch of the Ford Duratec powered Roadsport 175.

"Collectively they have combined to deliver for us."
