The boss of a leading crisps company has joined the board of the East Malling Trust - the charity which supports horticultural research.
Nimisha Raja, who is behind Sittingbourne-based Nim's Fruit Crisps, will bring her industry knowledge to the charity which raises funds for NIAB EMR, the leading horticultural research centre in the county.
Oliver Doubleday, chairman of East Malling Trust, said: “The trust has always focused on supporting research that promotes the commercial success of growers. Nimisha’s arrival will help us strengthen the connection between research and growing to secure opportunities for manufacturers to close the loop and bring new fruit-based products to the market.
“East Malling is synonymous with advances in soft and top fruit production, and we are delighted to have Nimisha join the board to help us continue our journey.”
Nimisha Raja added: “Advancing research in horticulture is vital for the UK, especially for companies who manufacture and sell fruit and plant-based products.
“Collaboration and more R&D [research and development] focused towards manufacturers processing fruit could be a new avenue for EMR with the aim that it is turned into commercial benefits for the trust and its partners at NIAB EMR, as well as for the country’s domestic food manufacturing sector."
Nim’s Fruit Crisps employs 25 people at its purpose-built factory in Sittingbourne. The firm’s products can be found on the shelves of UK supermarkets, Marks & Spencer and are used by the NHS, British Airways, Eurostar and The Craft Gin Club.
