Cross-Channel operator Eurotunnel has reported record revenues as it braces itself for the possible impact of Brexit later this year.
Revenues reported by Getlink, the operator's parent company, toppled €1.079billion (£950million) for 2018 with revenues up across the board.
The company saw revenues from its shuttle services increase by 6% to €636.4m (£561m) with a record year for the number of Eurostar passengers using the tunnel, up 7% to nearly 11 million.
In addition, freight using Le Shuttle set new traffic records in October and November, with nearly 1.7m trucks crossing the Channel under the sea.
Car traffic reached a record high since 2000 with more than 2.7m passenger vehicles making the crossing, while rail freight saw an increase of 3% to 2,077 trains.
Jacques Gounon, chairman and chief executive officer of the group, said: “Getlink, a true service company, continues to grow by strengthening its positions and setting new all-time records”.
Eurotunnel has been left fuming in recent weeks over the UK government's decision to ignore the firm when awarding contracts to move freight away from the Port of Dover in the event of disruption if we split with the EU without a deal in place.
Jacques Gounon wrote to transport minister Chris Grayling accusing him of engaging in anti-competitive practices, confirming that Eurotunnel could undertake the work and threatening legal action, if similar contracts are not awarded
