Margate Masonic Centre hosts open day this August

Have you ever wanted to learn more about Freemasonry, the unique membership organisation which has thrived for over 300 years? If so, now is your chance.
On Saturday 5th August, Margate Masonic Centre, based in New CrossStreet, will open its doors to the public.
Thanet locals, as well as those travelling from further afield, are invited to come along between 10am and 3pm to enjoy this special opportunity to see inside a Masonic Lodge room, view the regalia and talk openly with the Freemasons.
During the day, you will be able to find out what it means to be a Freemason in the local and widercommunity, and what inspires around 6 million men and women aroundthe world, who come from all faiths and backgrounds, to join.
Freemasons gather in individual Lodges throughout the country. In East Kent alone, there are 174 Lodges, with around 5,000 members, including 17 men’s and 3 ladies’ Lodges that meet in the Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Westgate and Birchington areas, including Union Lodge, St Johns Thanet Lodge, Porta Maris Lodge and Trinity Lodge.
Stephen Wyatt, Provincial Grand Membership Officer and a member of Union Lodge, which is one of four Lodges that meet at the Margate Centre, said: “Freemasonry in this area dates back to 1763 whenUnion Lodge moved from Spitalfields in London to Margate.
“Back then, the members metat various hostelries until the building here in New Cross Street was openedin 1895.
“Our members come from all walks of life and age groups – from 18 years to their 90s – but we all have a common goalwhich, amongst other things, includes friendship and charity.
“Freemasonry is one of the oldest social and charitable organisations in the world founded on its core principles of Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Charity, so why not come along on the day and find out a little bit more.”
