A Grade I listed mansion formerly owned by Lord Kitchener has been sold after being marketed for £6 million.
Broome Park, which has an 18-hole championship golf course, has been snapped up by Anson Chan, an investor in Hong Kong and chairman and chief executive of real estate developer the Bonds Group.
The new owners, who bought the 250-acre estate from the Diamond Resorts Group, want to return it to a hotel resort under the management of Countrywide Properties.
The mansion near Barham, Canterbury, was built in 1638 during the reign of Charles I and has been split into 18 holiday apartments with 14 holiday lodges.
Considered one of the finest examples of Carolean architecture in England, it also has a restaurant, hall, bar, an indoor pool, gym and two all-weather tennis courts.
Its golf course, designed by Donald Steel, opened in 1981.
Anson Chan, chairman of the Bonds Group, said: “We are very pleased with the acquisition of Broome Park, its long history and connection to Lord Kitchener are particularly appealing to us.
“It is my intention to restore it to its former glory over the next few years.”
Jeremy Jones, director at Christie & Co, which brokered the sale, said: “Broome Park presented a fantastic opportunity for a variety of buyers as it offers potential to capitalise on the current estate and location.
“We are seeing substantial interest in the UK regional market from Asian investors who have confidence in the long term UK forecast.
“We wish Anson Chan all the best and look forward to seeing how he develops the estate.”
Mark Winthorpe and Andrew Walsh of Pannone Corporate LLP advised Diamond Resorts Group and Paul Smith and Harriet Clark of Osborne Clark LLP acted for the purchaser.
