Only days before the before the start of National Apprenticeship Week, two organisations have pledged to take on more young people.
The Co-operative Group is set to recruit 800 new apprentices – double last year’s number.
All Seasons Care Services in Herne Bay has launched its 2012 scheme aimed at people over the age of 18 who are not in education or employment and living in Herne Bay, Whitstable or Thanet. It is holding an open day at Westwood Cross Shopping Centre on Saturday.
Jo Corris, business administration apprentice, said: "Being an apprentice gave me the opportunity to kick start my career and begin full time employment whilst earning a valuable qualification."
Bianca Fagan, finance apprentice, said: "It’s a great opportunity to gain a practical experience at the same time as studying for a professional qualification."
Jon Butterworth, IT apprentice, added: "My apprenticeship equipped me with all the experience and skills I needed for my new career."
Co-op apprentices will be based in a wide range of businesses from food, pharmacy and motors to legal and financial services and farming, as well as many corporate functions such as IT and HR.
Last year, some 400 apprentices went through The Co-operative Apprenticeship Academy and the group aims to provide 2,000 opportunities by 2014.
Peter Marks, group chief executive, said: "Youth unemployment is spiralling with over one million 16 to 25 year olds out of work. Coupled with the unpredictable economic future, it’s no surprise that some young people feel unsupported and demotivated.
"We believe businesses have a real responsibility to open doors for young people by giving them opportunities to gain new skills, knowledge and experience so that together we can build a strong and successful future for young people and our country."
