50 firefighters tackle workshop blaze
08:23, 21 January 2009
About 50 firefighters fought a blaze which swept through a car workshop last night.
Ten pumps supported by several specialist appliances were called to the blaze in a single storey workshop in Otterham Quay Lane, Upchurch
Kent Fire and Rescue Service Control staff started to receive calls to the incident at around 7.45pm.
Crews from Medway, Strood, Chatham, Sittingbourne and Teynham, plus several other stations, fought the blaze at its height.
Their efforts were hampered by the lack of a nearby water supply and crews had to shuttle water to the scene manually.
The blaze also affected a nearby semi-detatched house, but firefighters were able to prevent any serious damage.
The workshop was completely destroyed by the fire. Firefighters were still on the scene damping down this morning
