The 74-year-old, a member of Deal Pathfinders Club, was described as a "happy and colourful person".

Friends said Mr Firth will be missed for his jokes and knowledge at quiz nights in the town.

Deal Pathfinders secretary Pat Winder said: "Ted was a real Deal character known by almost everyone in our town.

"He had been a member of Deal Pathfinders Club for almost 25 years and hardly ever throughout this time missed a club night.

"He was what you would call a very loyal member. He loved his outings and our yearly holidays to Eastbourne.

"Ted was a very colourful character and had very strong views on everything you cared to discuss with him. He had an abundance of knowledge and if you had a quiz night you all wanted him on your team.

"He will be greatly missed, not only by Deal Pathfinders, but also by the many people in Deal, who I'm sure will never forget this lovable man."

Entertainer Mandy Winters, patron of Pathfinders, said she devastated when she heard about Mr Firth's death.

She added: "I have been patron for 12 years and during that time he was a total joy to the club. He was so happy and we will miss his jokes."

Mr Firth was a regular visitor to the town centre riding his mobility scooter. He died on his way to catch a bus in Victoria Road after walking from his home in Gladstone Road.

Mr Firth was a single man who lived alone. Flowers and messages have been left at the bus stop by Deal Castle Paddock.
