We have a few interesting newcomers at Crayford Dogs on Thursday and it’s best to back them before they get too well known. With this in mind, I would like to give you some likely candidates.

Jonaleens Boy recorded a time of 24.04sec over 380 metres and starts his career in grade A6 which should be well within his scope.

His lack of experience goes against him but he has improved his sectional times, trap to line, during each of the three trials he had to get on to the race card.

And if he can improve in that area again, he will have a real chance of winning.

Fairyhill Mick looks to have a great chance, starting in bottom grade, of making it a winning debut.

His latest trial time of 24.16 would normally be good enough to win at least an A7 race so he looks to have a real shout.

It will be interesting to see what sort of price the local bookmakers will make him but I suspect they will give the dog a fair amount of respect.

Before joining Crayford trainer Arun Green’s kennels, the dog had four full races in Ireland, three at Galway and one at Kilkenny, and he also had a trial over 515 metres at Hove so he will go to the traps here with plenty of race experience.

Trainer Patsy Cusack seems to produce a high percentage of winners in their debut races and he may have another success in Good Poet, who has nailed a couple of decent times in trials, albeit his sectional times were slow. You would have to expect the dog to improve in that area and his overall finish times will fall.

He looks strong starting in grade A6 and if he traps nicely he should win.

Over the longer 540 metres distance, trainer Barry O’Sullivan sends out Cloon Rocket in grade S5 and I think he may surprise a few people.

The dog has had six races in Ireland and the form lines show he is a strong finisher which will hold him in good stead here.
