Wicked.

Even the word has dual meaning; either evil, morally wrong and sinful or, quite simply, brilliant.

Spectacular sets, costumes, casting and technical wizardry - the smash-hit West End musical was, thankfully, only ever going to satisfy one of those definitions.

Now in its fourth year at London's Apollo Theatre, it's easy to see why 2.5 million people have followed a well-trodden path where, for once, the streets really are paved with gold - only this time the fictional kind as the play is based on Gregory Maguire's prequel novel to L.Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The captivating show takes Baum's central characters from the 1900 novel and - long before Dorothy was transported by tornado to the land inhabited by Munchkins, flying monkeys and talking scarecrows - explains how rival witches from the north and the west first meet as sorcery students.

It's worthy of its Visit London Award for Best Family Fun, and with a Superbreak package you'll have the added enjoyment of being able to click your heels back to your nearby hotel rather than spending the last 20 minutes of the show nervous about missing the last train home.

To sit back, watch the performance, and know you can be tucked up in bed before the auditorium has had time to clear makes such a difference to the entire theatre experience.

A hotel stay after the show is a great add-on and Superbreak can remove all the hassle of getting bogged down searching endlessly for theatre tickets, somewhere to eat in advance and a suitable hotel within budget.

Arrive early in the day, be treated to a satisfying three-course meal at The Rubens at the Palace, a fabulous four-star hotel just a few minutes' walk from the theatre, and enjoy a civilised glass of wine before taking a leisurely stroll to your seats.

The return journey is equally easy-going as you avoid the scrum for seats on the train home.

And just when you thought the magic had ended, a beautiful surprise awaits as you prise open the door of your hotel room (and no, it wouldn't be right to reveal all and spoil the fun, but rest assured, it's wicked!).

Superbreak offers a range of packages that combine overnight accommodation and tickets to the show to suit all tastes and budgets.

A package including a one-night stay at the four-star Rubens Hotel on a bed and breakfast basis with a stalls or dress circle ticket to see Wicked costs from £147 per person until the end of April, based on two sharing.

Superbreak can also arrange return rail travel as part of the London package. A range of other breaks are available.
