Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler admits the hunt for a striker is proving difficult.

The Gills are likely to head to Southend tomorrow (Tuesday) still without an additional and much-needed extra striker.

Hessenthaler (pictured) said: "We need someone but it’s not easy. I am being honest. There are players out there but players who won’t drop down to this level. That’s the reality of it."

Hessenthaler has lined up a deal to bring in a Championship striker but the player is having problems accepting dropping down to League 2.

"I think his agent would do it but I am not sure if his dad or the player would," said the Gills boss.

"You then have to look at other targets and that’s what we are doing. We will wait and see.

"We can’t do any more than we are doing and we are speaking to people every day.

"There are players under contract who I would like but they are not easy to get hold of because teams won’t let them out. It’s difficult but we will keep trying and we are looking at players who will come in on trial."

One player expected on trial this week is former Notts County forward Njogu Demba-Nyrén.

The 28-year-old, who was born in Gambia but is of Swedish nationality, was on trial with Birmingham City in the summer.

The much-travelled front-man, with pace and height, has played for clubs in Sweden, Greece, Bulgaria and Norway and is currently a free agent.
