Andy Pugh is getting better and better according to Welling boss Jamie Day

Welling boss Jamie Day has admitted he is surprised 11-goal striker Andy Pugh is not on the radar of Football League clubs.

After seeing 12-goal Charlie Sheringham complete his move to AFC Bournemouth, Day revealed he was amazed that there has been no interest in Pugh.

The former Gillingham striker, who scored 17 league goals last season, has been in prolific form for the Wings to help them joint-top of Blue Square Bet South.

"Obviously Charlie has done well but at the same time we've got strikers who are just as good, and in my opinion better, than him at our club," said Day.

"I'm not knocking Charlie and I wish him well at Bournemouth but I'm surprised that no-one has enquired about any of our players.

"Andy Pugh is our top scorer. He is more experienced now after a full season at this level and he is developing as a player and getting a bit stronger.

"We always knew that he was able to score goals but his all round game has improved now."

While Day was pleased that none of his promising young crop of talent, which includes skipper Jack Parkinson and forward Loick Pires, remain at Park View Road, he admitted that the club would not stand in their way of a move into the Football League.

"I don't want to lose anyone, especially with where we are in the table at the moment, but if the chance to go full-time comes along then I don't want to stop them," said Day.

"Andy Pugh has dropped out of the professional game for two years now and the aim is obviously to get back there."

Welling travel to Eastleigh on Saturday with Loui Fazakerley (calf) and Pires (hand) expected to be fit after training on Wednesday night.
