BETTESHANGER’S Arthur McCaughan has qualified for the last 16 of the National Champion of Champions after producing some memorable bowls in the regional finals at Bromley.
Knowing that three wins were required to secure his place at Finals Day, McCaughan met Ashford’s Paul Woolford in the opening game and, after a hard fought tussle, he ran out victorious 21-19.
The semi-final pitted McCaughan against fellow Kent Liberty Trophy player Paul Gent, from the Angel, and the Betteshanger player raised his game to another level in winning 21-9.
McCaughan was now through to the same stage as last season, and ensured there was no repeat of his defeat of 12 months ago by beating Richard Dray from Worthing 21-15.
This success cements McCaughan’s reputation as one of the best singles players in the area, and he will now compete against England’s elite at Lowestoft on March 18-19.
