Norman Giller, a close personal friend of the late Gillingham Football Club director Brian Moore, has spoken of his disappointment that the broadcaster was not awarded an OBE for his services to television.
"We put forward his name but the Whitehall mandarins thought otherwise," he said.
The great and the good from the world of football and television broadcasting crammed into the little church of St Giles and St Nicholas in Farnborough Village on Monday for a celebration of Brian Moore's life.
Brian Clough made the journey from his Derbyshire home to lead the managerial tributes along with Ron Atkinson who came down from Birmingham.
John Motson, Barry Davies, Trevor Brooking and Dickie Davies were among those from the world of television.
Gillingham Football Club was represented by chairman Paul Scally, player-manager Andy Hessenthaler and club captain Paul Smith.
They heard Lord Weatherall, former speaker of the House of Commons describe Brian as a "fine and lovely man" who worked tirelessly for several charities in the Bromley area.
