Two Border Force ships have been redeployed from the Mediterranean to tackle the ongoing crisis of migrants crossing the Channel into Kent.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid made the announcement after holding talks with senior officials earlier today.

Yesterday six Iranian men were pictured on Kingsdown Beach after making the crossing and this morning Border Force officers were called to another group in Greatstone.

Since November, 220 people have attempted to cross the English Channel in small boats.

Mr Javid earlier declared the ongoing crisis a "major incident."

The Border Force cutters will patrol the Channel between France and the UK in an attempt to thwart the rising number of migrant attempts.

The news was welcomed by Dover and Deal MP Charlie Elphicke who said: "I have been calling for return of our Border Force cutters, so very much welcome the Home Secretary's announcement.

"More still needs to be done and I hope to be able to meet the Home Secretary in coming days to discuss next steps."
