Boris Johnson has been discharged from hospital following his battle with Covid-19, it has been confirmed.

The Prime Minister, who was admitted last Sunday had spent time in intensive care fighting the coronavirus, was allowed home today.

But he will not immediately return to work on the advice of his medical team.

In a statement on Twitter this afternoon, the PM said: "It is hard to find the words to express my debt to the NHS for saving my life.

"The efforts of millions of people across this country to stay home are worth it. Together we will overcome this challenge, as we have overcome so many challenges in the past."

He had been taken into ICU at St Thomas' Hospital London last Sunday after his symptoms worsened, but he was moved onto a ward earlier this week.

In his absence, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab - the PM's 'designated survivor'- took over the running of the country.

It is not yet known when Mr Johnson will return to full duties.

Mr Johnson's pregnant partner, Carrie Symonds, passed on a message of thanks to the NHS, adding: "I will never be able to repay you."

A Number 10 spokesman said "The Prime Minister has been discharged from hospital to continue his recovery at Chequers.

"On the advice of his medical team, the Prime Minister will not be immediately returning to work.

"He wishes to thank everybody at St Thomas' for the brilliant care he has received.

"All of his thoughts are with those affected by this illness."

Kent MPs have also tweeted their support to the PM.

Tonbridge and Malling's Tom Tugendhat posted a message of goodwill, saying: "Fantastic news Boris Johnson is recovering and has left hospital.

"Every family prays for recovery and every recovery is a blessing. Thank you NHS."

Dover and Deal's Natalie Elphicke said: "Fantastic to see the PM so much better - and a wonderful Easter Sunday message."

Helen Whately, who represents Faversham and Mid Kent, tweeted: "So good you’re on the mend Boris Johnson.

"Thank you to all those nurses, doctors and others in our NHS who cared for our Prime Minister and who are caring night and day for thousands more."

Folkestone and Hythe's representative in Parliament, Damian Collins, added: "Amazing news that Boris has been discharged from St Thomas’ - may he make a swift recovery. Thank you NHS."
