Brick thrown from bridge on to ambulance

00:00, 13 June 2003

A SHOCKED ambulance crew escaped unhurt after a brick was hurled at their vehicle’s windscreen from a footbridge in Gillingham.

Police have revealed that the attack, on Saturday, was the second brick-throwing incident in two days.

The incident happened as the crew was ferrying a patient to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham. As the ambulance passed under a bridge which crosses Hoath Way at the junction of Fairview Avenue, a missile was thrown at the vehicle.

The object, which is thought to be a house brick, hit the windscreen but did not smash it.

PC Kerry Forster, of Medway Police said: “The ambulance crew were lucky on this occasion. They are providing a public service and this mindless vandalism could have caused a major incident. We have also had another report of two eight to 10-year-olds throwing stones and bricks onto cars on the M2 the very next day.

“I would urge anyone with information about either incident to contact us immediately.”

The ambulance continued its journey to the hospital. The crew and their patient were unharmed, but shaken by the experience.

Paul Gates, from Medway NHS Ambulance Service, said: “People who throw stones at ambulances should remember one day they may be need to travel in one.”

Anyone with information should contact PC Kerry Forster on 01634 884035 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
