Bug outbreak causes school closure
00:00, 03 July 2006
A PRIMARY school has been closed over fears of a possible E. coli outbreak after a child was confirmed as having the infection.
Another two children from Hayes Primary School at Bromley are feared to have the bug and others displaying symptoms are being tested.
E. coli is a bacteria with a strain that can cause sickness, stomach pain, diarrhoea and fever.
The spread of infection can be stopped by careful hand-washing, especially before eating, after using the toilet and before handling food.
Dr Rachel Heathcock, South East London Health Protection Unit Director, said: “We will also be asking for samples from all children and staff - only once they have had a negative test result will they be able to return to school once it has been officially opened.”
The school will remain closed for several days but it is hoped it will re-open on July 10.
If your child has been affected please call the Bromley Extra newsdesk on 0208 3087401
