Gillingham extended their unbeaten run to 12 games at Burton but had to settle for another draw.

The Gills came from a goal down in the first half to draw 1-1 thanks to Cody McDonald’s (pictured) superb finish.

It was the Gills’ ninth draw in their last 14 League 2 games but it was enough to lift them up to fifth in League 2 – their highest position of the season.

Burton started the match sitting 22nd in League 2 but took the lead on 27 minutes with a header from Sam Winnall which crept in past keeper Alan Julian.

The Gills took until the 78th minute to level the match when McDonald volleyed home his 20th goal of the season.

The Gills trailed at the break but came close to scoring themselves in the opening 45 minutes.

Either side of Winnall’s first half goal Gillingham had two efforts cleared off the line.

Matt Lawrence had a header bundled off the goal-line on 16 minutes and seven minutes before the break Andy Barcham did well to dig a shot out but his effort was hooked away by Scott Malone.

Gillingham had started the first half well and looked to be in charge, with Adebayo Akinfenwa bullying the Burton defence. The Gills striker did well to get a 15th minute shot at goal, on the spin, but keeper Adam Legzdins saved with his chest.

The goal that separated the sides came from Andy Corbett’s cross which Wolves loan striker Winnall guided goalwards. Julian got a touch but could only watch as the ball bounced in off the upright.

Akinfenwa tested the reflexes of Legzdins early on in the second half when he turned and shot low but the keeper saved well.

At the other end Winnall came close to his second of the afternoon with a deft flick that dropped just wide of the goal.

McDonald produced a great bit of skill to get the Gills level as he collected Oli’s flick, bamboozled the Burton left-back, before volleying the ball into the top corner.

Garry Richards headed a late chance wide and Gillingham had to make do with another point, extending their unbeaten run on their travels to eight games.
