Button cell battery choking hazard warning from KCC

13:00, 11 October 2016

Children could suffer severe burning and even die if they swallow a dangerous battery, Kent trading chiefs have warned.

Button cell batteries can be found in many small electrical devices including toys, keys and musical books.

KCC trading standards officers are warning that if such a battery is swallowed by a young child, it could 'get stuck in their throat' and cause severe burning within just two hours or potentially death.

Officers have called for devices with these batteries to be kept away from children, especially if the battery compartment is easily opened or not fully secure.

It is also advised to keep spares right out of the reach of children.

If a button cell battery is swallowed, parents should call 999 immediately.
