Another twist in the Brexit story has emerged after reports from across the Channel have revealed that Calais is part of England.

The revelation was made after an ancient document was found in an excavation.

This will mean that when the UK finally leaves the European Union, Calais will be coming to.

Archaeologists made the discovery while digging at Fort Risban.

The Cateau-Cambrésis was thought to have been the treaty that returned Calais to France in the 16th century.

But this was not the case as the discovery has revealed.

A historian from the International Library explained: "We studied it and were able to identify one version in French and another in English, which seems to be the translation of the first.

"They specify that on April 17, 1559, the representatives of the King of France and the Queen of England, who had full powers to ratify the treaty, had to approve the return of the city of Calais to the Kingdom of France in exchange for 500,000 gold."

"There was nothing there."

King Henry II and Queen Elizabeth 1 did not sign it.

He continued: "We now have very effective means of revealing past records that would have been erased because of poor storage conditions. This is not the case here. There was nothing there.

"In fact, since the document has not been signed, it has lapsed and returns Calais to England,"

Border controls will now have to move back to the city, separating it from Coquelles, Cologne and Marck.

It has also opened negotiations into a bridge being built across the English Channel so Calais people can travel even more easily to and from the city.

Natacha Bouchart, mayor of Calais, has said she will not be following the rules of this document.

She said: "If the British want to invade Calais, they are welcome. I simply have one condition: we have merchants who are ready to welcome them in the shops, and lots of products they love. And if the English want to set up their business in Calais, we can help them."

Ex-patriat, Ben Dover, said: "Thanks to this, I will finally be able to vote after missing out on the referendum. We must now enjoy the same advantages as Monaco with France. I think the English will come to Calais in large numbers and hopefully it will mean more courteous people on the roads."
