Conmen use 'gas explosion' ploy
00:00, 28 September 2001
BOGUS callers robbed an elderly woman of £1,400 cash when they called at her house in Nixon Avenue, Ramsgate. They told her that someone had been injured in a nearby gas explosion and they needed to come in and check her property.
The callers visited three other addresses in Northdown Road, Broadstairs, Laleham Road, Margate and Alexandra Road, Ramsgate but nothing more was stolen.
Police are warning householders across Kent to check the ID of callers. A police spokesman said: “A genuine caller will produce an ID card along with telephone number on which to verify their identity. If in doubt, don’t let them in and call us.”
