Gillingham stepped up negotiations with young defender Connor Essam this week.
The teenager’s representatives were due for talks with chairman Paul Scally.
Mr Scally is confident the central defender will agree new terms after becoming a regular first team starter in the second half of the season.
He said: "I am sure Connor wants to stay and I am sure his agents are keen for him to stay.
"He is still learning his trade and he needs to continue over the next couple of years at the same level as he is now."
The emergence of young players has been a highlight of an otherwise disappointing season.
"It is always good to see youngsters break into the team," added Mr Scally.
"It was good to see Jack Evans do it. It is good to see Jack Payne turn in consistent performances and so it is always nice to see youngsters come into the team.
"Ashley Miller is going to be a little star for the future.
"Time will tell and one always hopes these players keep going the way they are now."
