It appears that summer may finally be on its way – with the county set to bask in temperatures of 24C by the middle of next week.

May was one of the wettest on record but it looks as though the start of June will see clearer skies over Kent and rising mercury just in time for the school holidays.

It will seem a far cry from the conditions we experienced just weeks ago, when weather warnings had to be issued as rain and gales lashed the county's coastline.

By the end of next week many inland parts of Kent look set to enjoy some of their warmest days of the year so far, with temperatures in coastal areas also likely to top 20C.

The Met Office's long range forecast says temperatures are likely to be around or above average in the period to June 9.

It says: "By the end of the period, a northwest-southeast split in conditions becomes more probable, more unsettled and cooler in the northwest, drier and warmer in the southeast."

It has been something of a topsy-turvy year weather-wise, with sunny and dry spells the theme of the early spring before May brought the wind and rain.
