Thousands of parents are set to hear if they've got their child's primary school place of choice.

In Kent, around 85% of pupils entering primary school have been given their number one choice, with nearly 95% offered a place at one of their options.

All told, more than 16,000 applications were submitted - up 200 on last year.

In neighbouring Medway, 97% have been offered a place at one of their four named preferences for reception classes, with nearly 90% being offered their first choice.

Emails were due to be sent out by KCC at 4pm today, with letters arriving on doormats from tomorrow morning.

KCC deputy cabinet member for education, learning and skills, Gary Cooke, said: "It is pleasing to note that, notwithstanding the continued increased demand on our primary school places, we have been able to give 200 more pupils their first choice school than last year.

"That means that overall nearly 95% of all applicants have been offered a school of their choice."

Parents now need to decide whether to accept their school offers or look for alternatives.

Gary Cooke added: "We recognise that these excellent outcomes for the 95% will be of little consolation to the small minority of parents who have not received a preferred choice.

"We continue to work hard to improve our admissions procedures and identify specific areas hwere the need for additional places is required."

In Medway, junior school applications saw a 100% success rate for gaining entry to one of their choice, with 99.58% being accepted at their first choice.

Medway council's portfolio holder for children's services, Cllr Les Wicks, said: "I'm delighted to see so many families in Medway have been offered a place at one of their named schools and such a high number at their first choice school.

"With 90% of families receiving thier first choice junior school - one of the highest rates in the country - and nearly 90% getting an offer of a place at their first choice reception school, the vast majority of Medway families will have got the outcomes they wanted."

More than 4,000 applications were made to the authority.
