Date set for Gillingham's Kent Senior Cup return, against Blue Square side Welling United, at Park View Road
10:33, 05 October 2011
Gillingham will play Blue Square South Welling in the Kent Senior Cup second round on October 17.
The game at Park View Road will herald the return of the Gills into the county competition after a 13 year absence and also sees League 1 Charlton Athletic taking part.
Gillingham last met Welling in July, when they recorded a 3-0 pre-season victory over Jamie Day’s side, thanks to an own goal and strikes from Adam Birchall and former Wings player Danny Kedwell (pictured).
The night proved to be one to forget for Birchall, as he picked up an injury, having only been on the field for 20 second half minutes. He has not played a game since.
Gillingham were one of 12 clubs to have received a bye into the second round of the competition.
The Gills look set to use the tournament to give their fringe players valuable match practice.
Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler said: “It will be a game in which we can use our players that are not getting games and some of the youngsters as well.”
The current holders are Dartford after they beat Bromley 4-1 in last season’s cup final infront of a crowd of 2,025 at Princes Park.
Gillingham have twice won the competition, in 1946 and 1948, and been runners-up on four occasions, with most recent being in 1995.
Second Round draw;
Ebbsfleet United v Chatham Town
Bromley v Charlton Athletic
Faversham Town or Folkestone Invicta v Dartford
Margate or Cray Wanderers v Ramsgate
Thamesmead Town or Tonbridge Angels v Sittingbourne
Maidstone United v Dover Athletic
Welling United v Gillingham
Hythe Town v Erith Town
Remaining first round games to be played October 11
