Gillingham have a handful of players who are hoping to have done enough by the end of this weekend to win a contract at Priestfield.

Gills boss Martin Allen has been keeping tabs on Dean Morgan, Ryan Gilligan and Ben May over the last few days with a view to adding them to his League 2 squad. Morgan – absent from Gillingham’s friendly win against the Royal Engineers on Wednesday night – and Gilligan appear the most likely to get a contract.

Allen said: "Ryan scored 16 goals in League 2 the season before last so he obviously has something about him. I have had my eye on him for a little while because that scoring ratio is pretty good for a midfield player and we will see how Ryan does."

Ryan is the son of former Watford and Cardiff player Jimmy, who is now head coach of the Nike Football Academy.

"I always have a gut feeling about footballer’s sons," said Allen. "They will always have an extra discipline. They are brought up in the right way. I know of Jimmy Gilligan and used to play against him from youth football.

"We will continue to look at them. We are not going to have endless players. I don’t want a massive squad. We want to try and encourage the younger players but when these players are around there is no harm in looking at them.

"Dean Morgan did well against a team that I managed last year, playing on the left side (for Chesterfield).

"I thought he was pretty tricky and a bit decent and something different to what we have got. I thought he would be a good one. We will continue to look at him."

Ben May, a former Millwall and Brentford striker, is also training with the Gills.

Midfielder Michael Flynn, who was on trial with Gills, is expected to join Newport County.
