Driver trapped as floods hit county
00:00, 12 October 2001
FLOODING caused chaos for many motorists throughout Kent today, particularly during the rush-hour, following torrential rain and high winds on Sunday and overnight. One of the worst hit areas was Thanet. A car broke down in flooded Kingsgate Bay Road in Broadstairs and the driver had to be rescued by police.
Other roads in the area impassable included Brooksend Hill, which links the island to the Thanet Way, and All Saints' Avenue, Margate. Other main roads, including St Peter’s Park Road, were heavily flooded and traffic reduced to a crawl.
Kent police had several calls from people worried their basements were going to flood, or that scaffolding outside their homes would collapse, but no damage was reported.
