Welling were brought down to earth with a bump as they slumped to a resounding 3-0 defeat Eastleigh in Blue Square Bet South.
Michael Green, Richard Gillespie and Graeme Montgomery grabbed the plaudits for the home side, who registered their fourth win of the season.
Second-placed Welling came into the game with confidence and would have fancied their chances against a side who had only scored nine goals in 12 games before this one.
Green, on loan from League 2 Port Vale, opened the scoring on 29 minutes when he capitalised on a rebound from a free-kick off the Welling wall. Jamie Slabber's original effort was blocked, but Green's low strike into the bottom corner beat the outstretched Dan Thomas.
After the break, Joe Healy was sent off for Welling when the referee ruled he had dived in an attempt to win a penalty and the midfielder was shown a second yellow card. Despite the setback, substitute Luis Cumbers forced a good reaction save out of Gareth Barfoot in the Eastleigh goal soon after.
But, the numerical advantage began to tell for Jamie Day's men and Jordace Holder-Spooner showed his class to back heel into the path of Gillespie with 10 minutes to go, who thumped the ball past Thomas.
Montgomery sealed all three points two minutes later with a powerful left-footed effort.
Welling stay in second, but are now three points behind leaders Woking, who also have a game in hand.
Bromley mounted a stirring comeback to secure a point at Maidenhead in an entertaining 3-3 draw.
Substitutes Warren McBean and Hakeem Araba pulled the visitors back from 3-1 behind with goals in the last 20 minutes.
Leon McKenzie opened the scoring for Bromley in the opening minute when he latched on to Gareth Williams' deflected shot to slot past keeper Jordan Clement. But, the visitors lead was shortlived as Martel Powell equalised less than a minute later.
Maidenhead took the lead through Daniel Brown on 24 minutes with a neat finish inside the area and then Anthony Thomas made it 3-1 after 67 minutes to put Bromley well and truly on the back foot.
But, McBean began the comeback on 73 minutes when he volleyed home from Williams' corner and then Araba made it 3-3 with 11 minutes to go when he headed in a Marlon Patterson free-kick.
Maidenhead hit the bar in stoppage time from a corner and then Araba saw a shot go just wide as the winner eluded Bromley in the dying moments.
