Eco-activists have revaled how they plan to shut down Medway’s Kingsnorth Powerstation later this summer.

Organisers of the 2008 Camp for Climate Action have revealed the protest will climax in a spectacular mass action to shut down the coal-fired plant.

Top of the list of tactics is an armada of rafts, which will be launched on the river Medway in a bid to circumvent the power station’s fencing.

CCA organiser Connor O’Brien, said: “With last week’s train hijack [at Drax, North Yorkshire], climate change activists have demonstrated that they are capable of pulling off spectacular, effective actions that maintain a high regard for safety and for the local community.”

Medway Police said it was prepared for the mass action.

Chief Insp Des Keers said: “The force intends to police a lawful and peaceful protest, but will not hesitate to bring offenders to justice.”

Last year’s protest saw 1,500 people close down BAA’s Heathrow head office for more than 24 hours, despite the best efforts of the Metropolitan Police. This year those at the camp, organisers say, will be joined by thousands more from across the UK to converge on Kingsnorth via land, sea and air.

Christine Ellis of the Camp for Climate Action said: “Last year we started planning the day of action at the camp. This year we’re already way ahead of the game; maps have been distributed, affinity groups formed and our four pronged mass action approach is going to be a spectacle to behold”.

The mass action will involve four groups, each using a diversity of tactics. The approach aims to play to the activists’ strengths, while providing something for everyone who wants to attend.

The ‘Great Rebel Raft Regatta’ (GRRR) will be launching an armada of rafts of every shape and size into the river Medway. From pirate ships to Viking boats, a multitude of different themed rafts, made out of recycled materials, are said to be already under construction.

Sarah Jenkins, from the piratical GRRR group, said: “Once on the river, we will swarm towards Kingsnorth like a giant shoal of disobedient fish, all with one simple and achievable aim in mind: shutting down the climate criminal.”

On land, while the ‘Orange Pod’ will be heading straight to the main entrance in a colourful, musical demo, the ‘Green Guerrillas’ will be approaching through the surrounding fields and woods, looking for weak points in the perimeter fence. As for the aerial approach – these plans are being kept strictly under wraps until nearer the time.

The camp will take place from 3rd – 11th August, near Kingsnorth power station. The day of action will take place on Saturday, August 9.
