There's small consolation for anyone travelling this Easter weekend; while the trains will be hopelessly disrupted, at least the roads might be a bit clearer.

The Highways Agency - which yesterday changed its name to Highways England - says it will clear roadworks in much of the county in time for the Easter rush.

The agency says 96.8% of roads will be roadwork-free this weekend, as projects are either temporarily stopped or completed.

Highways Agency Director of Customer Operations, Simon Sheldon-Wilson, said:

"This Easter, we’re helping drivers with their journeys by clearing roadworks across the majority of motorways and major A-roads in England.

"By suspending or completing roadworks, more lanes will be open and many of the associated speed restrictions will be lifted.

"Of course, we still advise drivers to plan their journeys, check the latest traffic and travel updates, and the weather forecast, before setting out."

It will be particularly good news for anyone hoping to visit friends or relatives, as major engineering works means many rail services will be cancelled, or replaced by buses.

London Cannon Street, London Charing Cross and Waterloo East stations will be closed from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

Instead trains will run to and from New Cross, London Victoria or London Blackfriars.

Rail bosses have warned people to check before they travel as many other services have been diverted, cancelled, or changed.

Trains to and from London Victoria will be diverted via Maidstone East and Sole Street to connect with replacement buses.

There will also be no trains between Sole Street and Faversham, between Gravesend and Maidstone West and between Sittingbourne and Sheerness-on-Sea.

Trains between Tonbridge and Strood will only run between Tonbridge and Maidstone West.

High speed services are also affected.

Trains to and from London St Pancras via Gravesend and Rochester will start and terminate at Gravesend and Faversham.

Trains which would normally run to and from London Cannon Street and Gillingham will be diverted to and from London Victoria and will start and terminate at Gravesend.

Replacement buses will run between Meopham/Maidstone East/Gravesend and Faversham, Gravesend and Maidstone West, and Sittingbourne and Sheerness-on-Sea.
